Irvington

Irvington is the smallest of the Hudson River villages with a population of 7,464 (2000 census). The downtown district is very charming with many turn of the century storefronts and Victorian residences.

Main Street offers Hudson River views in its descent to the railroad station. On the river side of the railroad are two waterfront parks.

The most recently built Scenic Hudson Park has exceptional trees and landscape. The view of the Manhattan skyline from its south end is magical on a cool summer evening.

Irvington has some of the most enchanting estate properties in the Hudson River Valley. Sunnyside, the home of Washington Irving, is a historic site, with much of its furniture original to the home. During the holidays there are candlelight tours of the home and there is usually live musical accompaniment. Other estate properties Irvington is known for include the Octagon House on Clinton Avenue East, which has been restored and is in wonderful condition. The home of Cyrus Field is located in Ardsley Park and many elegant colonial mansions adjoin the Ardsley Country Club on the Irvington side. These mansions date back to the late 1800s, when wealthy New Yorkers came up the Hudson by steam ship to the Country Club for golf, tennis and social gatherings.

Aqueduct Trail-A walk or bike ride on the aqeduct is a great way to view some of the beautiful mansions of the area.

Irvington has its own Town Hall Theater, which is utilized by acting groups from the local community as well as professionals. A new tradition is an annual community spelling bee.

The Irvington Public Library is a great example of adaptive reuse in an historic village. It was once owned and operated by Lord & Burnham, the company which manufactured greenhouses for notable estates such as Lyndhurst and the New York Botanical Gardens. The village acquired the building from a subsequesnt owner and gut renovated it to create a 10,000 square foot library with affordable housing above.
